I'm sorry...what did you just say?

So, I love my surgeon and his entire team...I trust them...The surgical coordinator called this morning to tell me that my surgeon performed my practice surgery on models of my noggin and decided that he couldn't get the results I needed from just my upper jaw 2 piece lefort.  He needs to break both jaws.
!*@$#*@*$*@---urgh! and oh crap! (to put it nicely)
So after I had a moment (ok, so a few moments shared by a dear supportive friend) I realized that I'm ok with this.  Here are my bullet points of thought on this right now:

  • My surgeon is wonderful and wants the best outcome for me.  That now includes double jaw surgery and genioplasty.
  • They could have told me this a week ago and I'd have more time to freak out.
  • My surgeon will now be making new models of my skull and performing the practice surgery before Monday.  So Monday will theoretically be the third time he's been in my skull...he will be very familiar and will do an even better job :)  lol...   Seriously though, that train of thought works for me!
  • I am going to have this surgery, it's set and I'm not turning back (confident, determined and excited big smile)

  1. Hi Colleen, I just stumbled upon your blog.

It looks like we have similar cases, the surgery being needed to correct an underbite.

I went through the same feelings at my first oral surgeon consult when she told me that I would definitely need to have surgery on both jaws. Originally because of what another dentist said off hand to me, I thought I would only need lower jaw surgery but that is certainly not the case! What I didn't realize the problem with only moving back the lower jaw is that it can actually create airway issues and give you problems like sleep apnea.

I thought it was hard to hear that before I even had braces on so I don't blame you at all for freaking out a little bit when you're so close to surgery. It's all for the better though that your surgeon figured all of this out now so that you get the best possible outcome. It sounds like you have a fabulous OS!

best of luck with the new models and with surgery!

  2. Colleen I was able to see your blog again. Ugh - sometimes blogger acts up! Anyway, I'm excited for you!! I have heard that doing two jaws is better than one because it will give you the "ideal" fit whereas only moving one jaw rarely offers the same result (although still good, not quite ideal). I think you will be thrilled with your new bite and results! I will keep on the lookout for more posts. I probably won't post until I get home on Sunday from the hospital. Will be thinking of you!!

Lots of good vibes and positive energy being sent your way!!!

    xo,
    Tara

  3. @Laura Thank you, you are so right. He is really taking the time to get be the best end result possible. I met with him today and feel so much better. I was also worried because my mother was joining me for the first time today and I didn't know how she would react to the additional changes...she, too, felt calmed by their wonderful care.
@Tara I'll keep posting, though it may be short and sweet for now. I will be thinking of and praying for you Saturday!
